Most jailhouse snitches are lying. This is beyond obvious. Offer someone who is locked in a cage the chance to go free or win early release if they tell a story about a stranger - someone they've been told is guilty anyway - and what do you think will happen? What are the odds you'll get the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? The criminal injustice system is predicated on many fictions, but few are so blatantly inconsistent with the quest for truth and justice than the use of jailhouse informants.
End the use of jailhouse informants
A Texas bill would end such testimony in death penalty cases. But why not end it altogether?
